FAQs
What is a continuing disability review?
Most individuals who receive Social Security disability benefits will go through a continuing disability review at some point. Continuing disability reviews are Social Security’s method for checking in on individuals to make sure that they are still entitled to receipt of benefits.
What should I do if Social Security tells me I’m being reviewed?
You should fully cooperate with Social Security’s request for information and make sure that you’re checking your mail for any correspondence from Social Security.
What happens during a review?
Generally during a review, Social Security will ask for information about doctors you have seen and medical treatment that you have received so that they can request copies of your medical records which will allow them to determine if your condition has improved to the point that you no longer qualify for benefits.
Will I still get my benefits during a review?
Yes, Social Security will continue to pay you benefits during the review. If Social Security determines that you no longer qualify for benefits, they will stop payment of your benefits unless you request continued payment during your appeal. If you receive continued benefits during your appeal period and Social Security ultimately affirms their decision that you are no longer disabled, the administration will ask you to repay the benefits you received during this time period.
What can I do to prepare for a continuing disability review?
The most important things you can do to prepare for a review is to continue to keep up with your regular medical treatment and make sure the Social Security has a current address for you so you do not miss any correspondence from them.
