FAQs

What are SSI benefits?

Supplemental Security Income or SSI benefits are a type of benefit that you may be eligible to receive if your medical condition meets Social Security’s definition for disability, but you have not worked, have not worked enough, or have not worked recently enough to have insured status for disability insurance benefits. In order to qualify for SSI, you must also meet certain income and resource limitations.

What are the SSI resource limitations?

While certain types of property, such as one house and one vehicle are excluded, Social Security generally counts all other major assets and all cash assets toward the resource limit of $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple.
